Performing Arts Centre

Memorial Boulevard School would be a perfect venue for a performing arts centre as it has an existing theatre space that faces the Pequabuck River and could serve as a gateway to Downtown, linking with the proposed River Walk.

Turning the athletic fields into an amphitheater would be a great Phase 1 to an arts centre project as it could host outdoor concerts, plays, Renaissance festivals and poetry readings.

Phase 2 could be renovating the existing indoor theatre to host local arts groups like Bristol Theatre Arts, Bristol Choral Society, OM Shows, Bristol Brass and Wind Ensemble, local dance studio competitions and recitals, as well as serving as a movie/cinema house venue.

This idea would be well supported by our town (as well as surrounding communities) since there is strong arts presence, and would surely bring upscale revenues to our city. Updated entry by Kim Villanti.

Original entry by Kim Villanti was listed as a Visual and Performing Arts Centre, which isn’t feasible in the near term. The visual arts component included a gallery for exhibiting and showcasing local artists and/or guest artists and an educational center that could take residence and offer art and theatre programs for kids in the community, both of which now have their own entries listed separately.

As a member of the performing arts department at Bristol Central, I believe that a Performing Arts Centre is a spectacular idea. At times, I feel that there is not enough concentration on the visual and performing arts in Bristol. There is a lot of talent in this city, we just need to cultivate it and I believe that this i dea would be a perfect way to do it.

I love it. It’s generated so much enthusiasm and the input is very positive. This performing arts center is exactly what our artistic community needs–a “home” of its own.

  3. First off, this is a building that was built to stand forever. Contractors were amazed way back in 1959, when a renovation took place, to find 18 inch load-bearing walls. The auditorium is huge. Its only ‘error’ is having windows on the North side which make dramatic lighting, movies, etc. difficult during the day. Ventilation is built in via a passive method. Installing AC might not cost all that much, but you will need a real pro to understand the structure. The wide hallways will enable a lot of gallery space. Handicapped access will also require a careful, enlightened approach. Please don’t take these comments as negatives as they are only voiced to alert the decision makers. You will need engineers and architects with experience on this style of building or you will have ‘change orders’ to beat the band. The building is a gem well worth saving and putting to good use. An arts center strikes me as an excellent choice.

  4. I think this is a great idea, it gives the youth of Bristol a chance to see more than local art and expand their knowledge

  5. A slam dunk and an absolute must to make the bigger picture a reality. The facility is already in place. It just needs to be expanded and prettied up. Soooo much talent in this town. Give them a showplace to showcase it!

As a former member of BEHS, CHMS, and Stafford Elementary School performing arts program, I believe that using MBMS as a performing arts center would be a great idea… After seeing Beauty and the Beast last week, I see how it will be of great usage as a performing arts center. The sound quality was amazing. A lot of people came to watch this performance… Can I mention that I am also part of the Bristol Brass and Wind Ensemble and believe that performances there would be sweet and would draw a lot more people to come see our performances…
Art Ward needs to see that the people of Bristol truly want this to be turned into a performing arts center. He is the mayor of Bristol and should do what the people actually want. It took him two weeks this October to let the firemen wear pink for Breast Cancer…. LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE OF BRISTOL….

  2. Update!

Have you heard about the Chamber’s plan to turn the Memorial Boulevard building into a proper theater down the road? To learn more about it, help us support the plan tonight at city hall! The Real Estate Committee public hearing is tonight at 6pm!

  3. Sincerely hope it comes about.   It would help make us a destination town.  joan

  4. This is a win, win, what this would do for Bristol is tremendous.  It would help to make bristol a destination town, a place to go to for entertainment.  we have very little of that in town. joan vallee

  5. The whole complex should/could be dedicated to the arts!
Old classrooms already in place for teaching dance, acting, photography, ceramics, etc.
Performances of all genres, exibits, and open tours of artist studios could be the draw for the inside. The outside has unlimited potential!

  6. This would be great to have. They need to update the building to code for the handicap. Install a elevator and a ramp for wheelchairs and for those who use canes.

  7. Tunxis Community College could certainly make use of a facility like this. We currently have a music ensemble and theatre group on campus, but as yet no theater.

  8. This project is sorely needed in Bristol and long overdue. Our high school auditoriums are too small. In addition to providing a permanent venue for the many performing groups in town needing a home, a performing arts center would attract many people to our downtown. This, in turn, would support restaurants and shops in the vicinity. I believe this project is of the highest priority for our community.

  9. I have always been apart of the performing arts ever since elementary school so having a Centre For The Performing Arts is a great idea!!!

  10. I love the idea of having a performing arts center in Bristol. I am highly involved in the performing arts at Bristol Central. It would also be a great place for the new theater group that was started last year to perform and rehearse instead of having to rent out a Church basement that has a small stage and no seats except for folding chairs.

  11. I think having a community theatre is an excellent idea and a great addition to Bristol. I am an avid student in the Performing Arts at Bristol Central and having a theatre that everyone could go to for shows would not only attract the young generation, but also the older generation! It would add cultural diversity and attract people to the beauty that Bristol has, especially on the Boulevard and on the Riverwalk. Moreover, why not make use of that empty space and beautiful auditorium? In a few years it will not function as a school, and we don’t want it to just sit and collect dust!

  12. As a student who is highly involved in the Performing Arts department at Bristol Central High School (as well as when I was in middle school at MBMS) I think this idea is wonderful. It would not only give performing arts groups a place to perform but also add cultural diversity to our town!

  13. I agree, Bristol has plenty of locations for sports in my opinion, but no one has anywhere to do any performing arts after the school year is over

  15. Yes, I was on the committee that Stortz and Ward initiated. The plans coming out of this committee are awesome I have been involved in Bristol Education and performing arts for 40 years. Sadly, Bristol begins projects but often doesn’t follow thru. The performing organizations in Bristol have been gypsies for too long, having to move from venue to venue. These venues were never built to support the needs of the arts. We waited a very long time for route 72 to be completed. This highway ends at the Blvd, just a short distance from Memorial Blvd School (which is to be closed shortly) Wouldn’t it be great if we didn’t have to wait another 30+ years to complete this worthwhile project??????

  16. Renovating the Memorial Boulevard School to make it a venue for performing arts is just what Bristol needs. As a member of the Bristol Choral Society, we find ourselves bounced from venue to venue, with some acoustics good and some not so good. Having a home which is made for performing arts so that the sounds are not lost to the building’s design would be a plus to performers and the audience. Let’s move on this one, please!

  17. If this is not done then the entire redevelopment project will be a waste of time and money.

  18. I love it. It’s generated so much enthusiasm and the input is very positive. This performing arts center is exactly what our artistic community needs–a “home” of its own.

  19. That building is beautiful. Senior Center, Arts Center, with office rents, retail, or town offices. Kathleen Connolly

  20. As so many people have said, this is a no-brainer! It has been suggested and talked about so many times, so many studies have already been done, that all that is needed is to be intelligently integrated into the Bristol Downtown Renaissance plan. In that regard, the one factor that will be critical to success is easy, safe access between this Arts Centre and the core (Piazza!) of the new downtown. If this can be done via a Pequabuck River Walk, even better!

  21. First off, this is a building that was built to stand forever. Contractors were amazed way back in 1959, when a renovation took place, to find 18 inch load-bearing walls. 22. If you support this (as I do), remember that this facility exists because the people of Bristol built a great high school (Memorial was Bristol High) a pool , the really fine auditorium, even a shooting range. Compare it to Central, or especially Chippens; practically new multilevel facillities without pools, with horrible access and HVAC issues already. The new schools should be state of the art and prepared to still be serving us when THEY are almost 90 years old!

  23. I am a high school student at Bristol Eastern High School and very interested in the arts. Bristol really needs a home for artists and this location would be great.

  24. I think this is a great idea, it gives the youth of Bristol a chance to see more than local art and expand their knowledge

  25. A slam dunk and an absolute must to make the bigger picture a reality. The facility is already in place. It just needs to be expanded and prettied up. Soooo much talent in this town. Give them a showplace to showcase it!

  26. The only problem I have with this is the pool- will the high school swim teams lose access to it?

  27. This absolutely NEEDS to happen. The Arts has been growing in Bristol rapidly and we artists need somewhere to express ourselves and use a place to work and have our own studio spacing. We don’t need anymore restaurants or random little outlet stores. We can drive up to 10 minutes tops to get to those kind of places. We have no where close by to go to as artists for this type of place.

  28. This is one of the few ideas that has the critical “anchor” potential necessary to seed and stimulate the rest of the many great ideas. However, we must be bold and think big if it is to do what we need it to do. A multi-faceted non-profit organization might include;
Artist loft live in studios on a sliding fee structure for fine arts, preforming arts, craftsman, small business incubator, and film producers (we have lots of film production in the area), gallery and retail space. Also a home for Bristol’s existing arts organizations and a local concert and performance venue. And yes as Mr Minor pointed out, extensive renovation plans for the theater already exist. However if it is no longer a school, a whole new realm of possibilities are opened up.

  29. Bristol has a lot of talent; why do we NOT have something like this already?

  30. Bravo! This is an excellent place to excite, inspire and build the appreciation for theater. Its historic feel, location and multiple work areas are perfect for performances, workshops, and connecting with others-young and old. Bristol has the talent, the business perspective and the organizational strength to make this happen! It’s a place to pull together all the performing arts groups throughout the city -to one place- where they can all shine! Vote LIKE!

  31. This would be a great use for a great building. I also wonder if since it has been used as a school for so long already if it could not also continue to be used for Arts education. Maybe not a full fledged Arts magnet school because we would probably lose too much of it’s use for the suggested purpose, but at least areas of the building that could be for Music lessons, drama and theater training, or even Technical offerings for those interested in audio and video production.

  32. There was a task force put together by then-mayor Bill Stortz that hired an architectural firm which came up with some amazing plans for restoring the theater and making it into a regional venue that could compete with the Warner and the Palace. Someone should take those plans off the shelf and dust them off.

  33. I feel that the school can be used for all aforementioned purposes. There is DEFINITELY enough room for a performance center, senior center, city offices, sports events, etc. Having all of these uses in this wonderful building and location makes it a great center for the whole community, which could result in more integrated participation within this community. People involved in the arts, working in city offices, playing sports, seeing that the senior center is also there may get involved with volunteering and vice versa all the way around!

  34. What an incredible thing this could be for Bristol!!! I support and will contribute to this in any way I can.

  35. I think this is an excellent idea. Bristol has many talented people and community theatre, music and dance are very popular. Definitely need cafe’, shops around also.

  36. There are some in Bristol who will fight against this, but I think it is an exceptional idea! It would be important to support the art center being there with other businesses around it, i.e. restaurants and cafes.

  37. I think this is a great idea and 100% percent back it.You would just have to convince the city/state to fund it.

  38. What an exciting thought to have such a place right here in Bristol!

  39. Would love a place for art exhibits or performance in Bristol!

  40. I read in the bristol press that the city council set aside some money to hire a company to do studies for the best use of this building. The article said things like senior center, and more office space for city hall, police, ect…..

I paid attention because of how Kim was talking about it at the last meeting so now I can have an opinion on it. :)

  41. As a dance teacher at a local studio and a member of Bristol Theatre Arts, I would love to see an arts center. The dance studio’s give a yearly performance and require a facility. And due to prices and availability school auditoriums are hard to come by, so our studio has moved our recital to an outside town. But if there was an arts center right in Bristol that would open its doors to allow the local studios to house their performances, that would be wonderful!

  42. Bristol has always been a sports town, yet there is a strong arts community. There is a theatre group without a home to perform in, there are artists who would love studio space and a community that would support an arts complex if it would serve the community. The sports complexes we have do not attract people to the downtown. Bring the arts there and they will come!

  43. Agree completely, this building would be perfect and within walking distance of the downtown along the new river walk. Leave the athletic fields for use as outside displays and art shows.

  44. This is the perfect proposal to apply for grant support from the NEA and other arts organizations. And if we add mixed uses – such as bringing the senior center back into the downtown using some of this space, contracting with the school system to hold workshops for students and teachers on site, etc. – the multi-generational, multi-functional use of this structure (including day, evening, and weekend hours of operation) will help develop the business and residential community surrounding it. Win-win-WIN.

  45. 1st floor spaces could house a single arts space gift shop or individual small store fronts for arts based businesses to help defray the costs of the building.
