Here’s a little about it:
Pervious pavement is designed to allow percolation or infiltration of stormwater through the surface into the soil below where the water is naturally filtered and pollutants are removed. In contrast normal pavement is an impervious surface that sheds rainfall and associated surface pollutants forcing the water to run off paved surfaces directly into nearby storm drains and then into streams and lakes (like what you see on the city side in the 3rd picture).
And here’s a few Web site to read more about it: http://inhabitat.com/pervious-paving-reduces-stormwater-run-off/

Would this surface be disability friendly?
YES this is amazing…i have a TON of trash in my yard everytime it rains from street run off that does not make it into the drainage system…this is perfect!!!
This is one of the things they recently did to make the CT State Capital more ‘green’. http://www.ct.gov/dep/lib/dep/water/watershed_management/wm_plans/lid/green_capitols_brochure.pdf
If they spent all that money to redo what was already there, I believe we should be doing it from the start!
