The Pop Up Piazza Festival is known for ‘popping up’ the feel of the future, but this year, equal importance is being placed on honoring downtown’s historic past.
In an effort to raise more awareness for downtown’s storied history, while celebrating its emerging future, the Bristol Historical Society has officially signed on as the premier nonprofit partner in this year’s Pop Up Piazza Festival.
Renaissance Downtowns Community Liaison Mark Walerysiak Jr. is excited for the event partnership.
“The relevancy is a perfect fit,” Walerysiak said. “Sure, the Pop Up is about looking forward to revitalizing downtown, but it’s also about never forgetting that this downtown was quite a happening place for generations. Many folks with strong roots in this community have great stories about being downtown. The vibrancy, the shops, meeting their future wife or husband by the Post Office. It’s the vibe we’re shooting for.”
Bristol Historical Society President Tom Dickau said he was pleased with the opportunity to be able to raise awareness for Bristol History as well as the Historical Society at the Pop Up Piazza.
“We need to remember the past as we rebuild for the future,” Dickau started. “The present generations have vivid and cherished memories of their days along Main and North Main Streets in the vibrant center of town. A revitalized downtown will afford future generations similar opportunities of pride in its city.”
Dickau said the Historical Society plans to have a booth and a projection screen with PowerPoint slides detailing the history of Main and North Main Street so people can get a slice of understanding for the downtown’s past. With the partnership the Historical Society will assist in handling sponsorships for the event.
“Bristol is a great community,” Dickau said. “Let’s celebrate its past and future together!”
Please join Bristol Rising, Renaissance Downtown, the Bristol Historical Society, the City of Bristol, sponsors, residents, businesses, and visitors alike at the Pop Up Piazza on August 4th.
Event Info:
Last year media reports hailed the Pop Up Piazza a ‘Smashing Success’, drawing 15,000-plus residents and visitors alike — a thrilling community accomplishment signaling Bristol’s ready for big things downtown.
The event is being put on by Bristol Rising, the group of 2000-plus community members dedicated to the revitalization of downtown Bristol, in collaboration with chief sponsor Renaissance Downtowns (master developer for the Revitalization of Downtown Bristol), premier sponsor Power Fuels, contributing community sponsors, and in partnership with the City of Bristol.
A detailed schedule of activities and main stage entertainment is expected to be released as the event draws near. Festival activities will run from 12 NOON to approximately 8 PM. Vintage cars will cruise onto Main Street at 2 PM. Come 8 PM, the spot light will be turned toward a special main event concert.
The event will be held on the Depot Square Site (former Centre Mall), concentrated toward the Main Street and Riverside Avenue area, and will feature the renovated Main Street façade and street scape improvements. Main Street, from Riverside to High, as well as a portion of Riverside Extension will be closed off until 10:30 PM with bustling action.
This all-day extravaganza is expected to draw thousands of residents from in and around Bristol, that will provide a glimpse into an exciting future for our Downtown with ingenuity, activities, and all the expected fun of Downtown’s future piazza. Before actual construction, this is a wonderful chance to bring the atmosphere of the future into the present.
This exciting event reinforces the City of Bristol’s efforts to promote downtown as a destination, and we hope that it will encourage everyone to join in and help the City and community rise to new heights.
